The Biggest Pokémon Movers and Shakers of the Week
Move over, Pikachu, it's time for Eevee to shine.
Surging Sparks is still incredibly popular as head into Christmas week—more on that later—but I want to start this week with another one of Pokémon's most classic mascots. Eevee and its evolutions are responsible for a lot of history across the Pokémon universe, from the TCG to video games like Let's Go Eevee!, and it's eternally one of the more popular plushies. There's also an Eeveelution for everyone, and that's where the Movers and Shakers begin this week.
Yes, this is that set. Several years ago before I got back into Pokémon, there were only a couple of fun facts I had in my back pocket about the trading card game. One, I could tell you everything about it from the first two years of its existence—this is less a brag and more of an admission of age—and two, I knew that if I said something about Alternate Art Umbreon VMAX from Evolving Skies I would sound like I knew what I was talking about. So, with that in mind, let's talk about Alternate Art Umbreon VMAX!
Released back in 2021 at a time when parents weren't exactly carpooling kids to the store to pick up packs, Evolving Skies will go down in Pokémon TCG lore as the perfect example of peak scarcity and hyper-chase cards. It set the stage for collector pieces that exploded later, like Latias & Latios-GX, or now Pikachu ex 238—which despite being in the most current, in-print set, is still holding strong at $450.
But Surging Sparks has been hard to find, and prices on product have stayed high during the holiday season. And with the Eevee-centric Prismatic Evolutions special expansion just around the corner (it releases on January 17), Surging Sparks may remain incredibly rare in the same way Evolving Skies dies. To wit, there are 20 individual cards in Surging Sparks worth more than $10, even as prices on singles in the set are overall starting to trend down.
Back to Eevee. Prismatic Evolutions is all about the fox and its evolutions, and the Japanese release Terastal Festival ex released last week to great fanfare. While there's still a month to go before we see the same here, collectors are already getting a jump on their favorite Eevee evolutions from the past, which brings us back to Evolving Skies and Alternate Art Sylveon V.
It was one of the biggest gainers this week, adding more than $10 and jumping all the way up to a $98 Market Price, flirting with the $100 price barrier it's sure to break over the next few months. Less than a year ago this one could be had for $50, but it took a big jump at the beginning of the summer before cooling off. It seems that only set the stage for this second spike to be even larger, and Sylveon looks like it's only starting to spike again.
But it's not alone, which is to be expected from a set like Evolving Skies that focused so heavily on one Pokémon. I counted—there are 22(!) different Eevee evolutions worth at least $10 in Evolving Skies.
Pack-leader Alternate Art Umbreon VMAX? You're looking at $1300, as the chasest of the chase cards reached unprecedented heights after adding $500(! again) to its Market Price since August. Leafeon VMAX? Up to the $300 price point after adding $20 in the past two weeks, while Glaceon VMAX—which for context began the year at $150—is up to $260 today after adding $40 in the past six weeks.
The Eeveelist goes on. If you're interested in collecting Eeveelutions when the new release drops, you should probably get working on it now!
Okay, back to Surging Sparks. I mentioned earlier that prices were starting to drop on some singles in the set, and that creates an excellent opportunity to pick up any pieces you've had your eye on.
Prices are inching downward almost across the board, but I want to call attention to these two because they're popular, expensive cards from the set that are cooling off in price now but will likely reappear in this column six and 12 months from now talking about their rebound. This is the chance to move on these before everyone's attention turns fully to 2025 and Eevees.
The Special Illustration Rare printing of Lisia's Appeal (remember that Special Illustration Rares show up in one out of every 87 packs on average) has dropped a tenth of its price over the last week, falling down to $63 today.
Likewise, Milotic ex 237, which was a bit of a sleeper hit from the set, has started to trend down. Look, it's hard to say that a card that came out of the gates at $75 flew under anyone's radar, but I don't think many people expected it to pop up to $160 like it did earlier this month, either. Like most Illustration Rares this is a gorgeous piece of art, and while it's hard to predict anything on a set this explosive, the fact that Milotic showed so much momentum suggested that it will be among the first to rebound.
That does it for me this week. After the Black Friday rush and all but the last-minute gift shopping completed, the Pokémon market looks to be settling in for a few weeks, and so am I! I hope you and your family enjoy a great holiday. I'll see you on the other side for more Movers and Shakers!
